At the helm is Captain and owner, Christian Townsend, whose lifelong connection to the water shapes every charter. A seasoned mariner with over forty-five years of boating experience, Christian brings an unmatched level of knowledge, safety, and seamanship to each journey. Beyond the helm, Christian is also the owner of CT Marine, a world renowned Naval Architeture firm specializing in tugboat design. His deep understanding of vessel design, performance, and the marine environment adds a rare level of expertise and intention to Grey Seal Charters. Every detail, from how the boat handles to how guests experience the water—has been thoughtfully considered. Grey Seal Charters isn’t just a boat ride—it’s a curated coastal experience, led by someone who has spent a lifetime on the water. Grey Seal was built in downeast Maine by the Rich Brothers in 1957 and is maintained to the highest standard by her crew offering the smoothest of rides only a wooden boat can provide.

Captain Christian Townsend brings over 45 years of experience on the water, navigating the coastlines of Casco Bay and New England with unmatched knowledge and confidence. A Master U.S. Coast Guard Captain & 100 ton Mate, Christian combines his hands-on seamanship with his expertise as a naval architect and owner of CT Marine. His deep understanding of vessel performance, safety, and the sea ensures every charter aboard Grey Seal is smooth, safe, and truly unforgettable.

Ryder Townsend
Ryder Townsend, Chef and onboard host, brings a fresh and authentic Maine touch to the Grey Seal experience. Partnering with the best purveyor of seafood in Maine, SOPO Seafood - Ryder prepares locally sourced oysters, classic Maine lobster rolls & chowders offering guests a simple yet elevated taste of the sea. Having grown up on the water alongside his father, he combines natural seamanship with a passion for fresh, high-quality food that perfectly complements our charters.
